If Comments to Blog Posts Don’t Make it Through

Like most users of WordPress we use Akismet to deal with our spam. Unfortunately it appears that it might be a little hungry and is chewing on some real comments too according to this blog post by John Wilbanks. John was responding to the Creative Commons on ChemSpider licensing discussion. I’ll comment more on that later.
Please know that I never willingly deny any posts made to the ChemSpider blog and moderate only to keep the “bad stuff” off of the site. If you try to post and it doesn’t show up there in 48 hours (even I take downtime) please send the post to infoATchemspiderDOTcom and it will get posted on your behalf OR I will try and dig it out of Akismet. As you can see below though…we do get a LOT of Spam!

Antony, reCAPTCHA is, IMO, a far better alternative to moderating comments:

Users can immediately see their comments, and it frees you from having to approve everything. Downside: some rather desperate people are actually hiring real people to solve reCAPTCHAs in order to get linkspam through (in the south pacific, for some reason). They eventually stopped after I deleted each and every one of their attempts.
Even with that hiccup, it’s worth it. You might be able to combine it with your current filtration system, depending on your setup.
Also works for Web applications:

I believe there is a reCAPTCHA WordPress plugin. Might be worth a try.

We used re-capthca on ChemSPider for people Posting Comments but had technical issues with it. We likely need to try and implement it again. I agree with the idea.
