Both the 2D and 3D structures are correct, the two depictions represent two tautomeric structures which undergo rapid interconversion.
Apr 12 2010 7:58AM Normal Acknowledged Tony Interesting one is this. It would seem that many back the -diol form, you and others (eg CAS), back the -dione form. BUT the majority show this as the -one-ol and it does have a monopotassium salt, a monosodium salt and a diethanolamine salt (1:1) !! Barrie
I wouldn't say we back the dione form...just that it shows up on the database that way. It wasn't a purposeful choice per se.
